Getting to Coolatai without the coastal slog
Gwydir Shire sits on the north-west slopes and plains of NSW — roughly 560 km north of Sydney, about 85 km west of Inverell and 80 km east of Moree, covering more than 9,000 square kilometres from the Nandewar Range toward the Queensland border.
Coolatai Local’s focus is the northern villages and the Warialda service town. Many travellers reach Coolatai on the quieter inland route between Warialda and Yetman rather than fighting heavier coastal traffic. From Brisbane-side trips, that Warialda–Yetman–border corridor is the practical story; from Sydney, Tamworth then inland highways toward Bingara/Warialda are common.
Fly-drive options usually mean Qantas into Moree or Tamworth from Sydney, or Link Airways into Inverell/Tamworth from Brisbane, then a hire car. Coach links serve Bingara and Warialda on CountryLink-style routes — useful backups, not last-kilometre Coolatai transport.
For maps, fuel and “what’s open today,” start with the Warialda Visitor Information Centre (Geddes Street) or Bingara’s centre on Maitland Street. Always confirm hours before you travel.
