Coolatai, Coolootai — reeds, creek and station

By Coolatai Local · 29 Sept 2026

Local tourism material records that around 1830 an English settler, R. B. Ottley, took up a fertile run north of Warialda and named it Coolootai. The story goes that a cooloo reed-covered watercourse crossed the run, and combining the reed name with an Aboriginal suffix ‘tai’ (creek) produced Coolootai. Coolatai village is generally treated as an adaptation of that station name.

Spellings vary across early newspapers and maps. What matters for visitors today is the living village on Ottleys Creek — and that the surrounding country was pastoral long before the 1902 survey created town allotments.
